Cape Critical Rivers ProjectWestern Cape, South Africa

Mail and Guardian Greening the Future Awards – South Africa
Biodiversity Stewardship Award
Winner 2015

The introduction of alien fish to Western Cape rivers for sporting purposes, the over-allocation of water in river catchments and alterations to river flows downstream of dams is endangering endemic fish species.

A new river flow monitoring system to high-priority rivers, led by the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Freshwater Research Centre, CapeNature and Aurecon, is helping farmers manage their water more sustainably by helping bridge biodiversity conservation with water resource management.
